Research Without Numbers

As clinicians, we are conditioned for numbers: vital signs, fall rates, drug dosages, etc. When it comes to research, the most powerful evidence often is weighted by statistical significance expressed in numbers.

But there’s another form of research: qualitative research. It’s used to acquire an in-depth understanding of human behaviors and the reasons behind people’s behaviors. Methodologies include storytelling, observations during activities and many others. The insight gained into the why and how of people’s decisions can inform practice and forge further questioning. Such studies can help us understand what’s important to our patients, which in turn helps us deliver better care.
